DIVERSITY TRAINING

"A PART NOT APART"

“A Part not Apart©” Is Absolute’s flagship programme. Having been rolled out in many South African companies the “A Part not Apart©” programme has become synonymous with lasting change and quality human interaction.  The programme is very focused on just how much diversity and relationships are inextricably linked to the bottom line issues of any organisation so whilst being fun and engaging the programme is by no means unconnected to the realities of running a successful organisation.  “A Part not Apart©” exists in both one and two day formats and relies heavily on Absolute’s tried and tested input-output methodologies.  Drawing on a strong pool of facilitators and maintaining a strong “bottom line” focus the programme is highly interactive and energetic, while at the same time being serious and targeted enough to deal thoroughly with aspects of diversity, change and change management.  The programme is suitable for employees at all levels of any organisation and has been run successfully for groups of senior executives, judges, prosecutors and scientists right the way across to cleaners, munitions workers and miners.  The programme is partnered with specifically designed audio visual material and supportive participant resources to aid in making “A Part not Apart©” not only a life changing intervention for staff and organisations but one that is also a uniquely South African experience.

This is a foundation programme designed to create a common understanding of diversity and the strengths it brings to organisations.  Topics covered include:

  • Understanding the self
  • Understanding the other
  • Understanding stereotypes and their impact on the organisation
  • Understanding the power of assumptions
  • The socialisation process
  • Common cross-cultural misunderstandings
  • Racism and sexism in the organisation
  • Developing a charter of commtment regarding diversity

The programme is facilitated by two trainers and can accommodate a maximum of twenty learners.  The duration of the course is two days.  The programme is assessed on completion and thereafter by impact assessment after two months.

Many service providers in South Africa are fearful or incapable of dealing with the cultural and racial aspects of Diversity that are still so undeniably real in South Africa. Though Absolute incorporates many elements of Diversity in our sessions, we never use this as an excuse to hide away from some of the real Diversity issues that are so common in the South African workplace as a result of our history and developing future.

MANAGING AND SUPERVISING DIVERSITY

This programme has received accreditation of NQF level 5 and aims to develop the necessary skills and competencies in deversity management in those that manage others.  Specific competencies in diversity management are identified following a pre-testing session and after consulting with the organisation.  Typical competencies include:

  • Providing feedback
  • Giving instructions
  • Handling conflict
  • Building effective diverse teams
  • Work planning for diverse teams
  • Mentoring and Appraising

The programme runs over three days, after which each particpant is required to develop a portfolio of evidence.  Thereafter a further day of training is held.  On the job assessment is carried out be assessors from Absolute prior to the final accreditation of learners. Our Diversity Management and Diversity Awareness Programmes are both accredited by Services Seta

TRAIN THE TRAINER "A PART NOT APART"

Absolute offers a "Train the Trainer" solution for large companies who can demonstrate the in-house skills and capacity necessary.  This programme runs over five days and Absolute can train a maximum of fifteen and a minimum of ten learners.

The programme covers facilitation skills pertinent to diversity training and in a particular to the "A Part not Apart" programme.. Absolute's Ubuntu process is explained and demonstrated.  Following the 5-day training the in-house trainers are required to facilitated two sessions with an Absolute facilitator and when competence is considered proven they are accredited to facilitate the programme. The company is then required to purchase the necessary training and pay a royalty per learner trained by the in-house trainers.  The licence is renewable annually and covers the trainers only while they work in the particular organisation.  It is not transfereable.

Our Train the Trainer Programmes are also accredited by Services Seta, as well as ETDP SETA as is the case with the BPWR programme being run within SITA currently.

RED CARD RACISM

Currently being rolled out with Transnet Freight Rail (formerly Spornet), Absolute’s very own targeted racism programme has hit the ground.  The programme is an intensive, one day, activities based course that really hits at the heart of racism and discrimination.  Aiming to get people to experience and discuss real life discrimination, the programme is hard hitting and up front.  Relying on experienced facilitation the programme aims to develop real life strategies for combating racism and discrimination in the workplace while simultaneously allowing participants the space to share, often for the first time, their experiences of these two topics that have become so relevant to South Africa as a nation.  The programme looks at racism in all its forms and addresses issues relating to both covert and overt racism.  Intentional and unintentional racism are also unpacked and all this is done within the broader context of unfair discrimination and the associated effects this has on individuals, teams and companies. The partnership between Absolute and Transnet Freight Rail has seen change coming to the railways and Absolute are looking in 2008 to take the programme to yet more South African companies.

This one day teambuilding intervention is a high energy programme to really get people to begin to discuss issues of race and discrimination as they pertain to the workplace and our ability to perform.  The programme is designed to help participants be able to:

  • Recognise discrimination in the workplace
  • Recognise racism in the workplace
  • Describe racism
  • Explain the impact racism has on performance in the workplace
  • Explain the negative impact racism has on team performance
  • Discuss how to build effective teams
  • Learn how to eradicate racism in your organisation
  • Implement the action plans that they have developed

"GOING GLOBAL"- Diversity Awareness for the Global Workspace!         Picture of Dubai Architecture (source ginamos.org)

Absolute have recently developed a global diversity awareness programme for clients looking to expand their interests into Africa, the Middle East and beyond.  The programme is fun and impactful, providing a strong background from which to approach relationships in the country of choice.  The programme is customisable ans can be tailored to suit the specific needs of the client.  Among many other things the programme aims to:

  • Develop awareness of the important link between relationship and business in any country.
  • Prepare participants for some of the cultural aspects they will need to be aware of when working away from South Africa.
  • Develop participants understanding of business protocol in various countries, right through from initial meetings to implementing solutions.
  • Strengthen participants' ability to relate effectively in a way that impacts the bottom line of your company.

Provide an understanding of cultural faux pas (mishaps!)as well as the do's and dont's for doing business on different continents and in different countries.<
